Bactrim is an antibiotic that is a combination of different medications that are used to treat different types of bacterial infections. This medication is made up of two powerful antibiotics called sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim, which help prevent the growth of bacteria in the body; this makes Bactrim an effective treatment for urinary tract infections, bronchitis, and many other conditions.

       
       
           

Uses of Bactrim

           

Bacterial diseases are the main targets for Bactrim’s usage. Primarily it has shown effectiveness against such illnesses as urinary tract infections, respiratory tract infections, gastrointestinal disorders as well as skin-related ones. Note that Bactrim does not work against viruses, such as those causing cold or flu.

               

Side Effects of Bactrim

A few people may have side effects after using Bactrim although it is generally well-tolerated. The most common side effects include:

The dosage of Bactrim varies depending on the type and seriousness of the infection being treated. This is because it comes in both tablet and liquid forms thus allowing for flexible doses; adults normally take 800 mg sulfamethoxazole 160mg trimethoprim daily or twice daily while children take according to their weight.

So when you take Bactrim, follow all directions given by your doctor exactly otherwise you might just as well be wasting time and money using a potentially harmful treatment that will definitely lead to development of drug-resistant strains even with an improvement of symptoms.

       

Precautions and Interactions

               

Before taking Bactrim let your doctor know if you are allergic to any drugs, sick with kidney or liver disease, or pregnant or breastfeeding as this medication may interact with other drugs.

Hence, pregnancy/nursing mothers and patients having liver/kidney diseases must inform physicians about their condition before using the drug.
