The biotene® product line (manufactured by Laclede and recognised as the Laclede range) was developed to replenish key enzymes (glucose oxidase + lactoperoxidase system) and proteins in Xerostomatic individuals controlling the overgrowth of harmful bacteria while maintaining the balance of healthy oral flora. Lactoferrin, an iron binding protein, inhibits pathogenic bacteria depriving them of iron, and Lysozyme splits the cell wall of pathogenic bacteria.
There are no contraindications for use because the ingredients are naturally found in saliva. This product range can be used therapeutically with active caries or periodontal disease as they maintain an optimal oral balance. Products are naturally sweetened with Xylitol, indicated in recent studies to significantly reduce plaque formation as compared to sorbitol containing products.
