Drug: Cefadroxil

As a cephalosporin antibiotic, Cefadroxil is used to treat bacteria that occurs in the skin, throat and urinary tract. Though relatively cheap when it comes to purchasing it over the counter at a pharmacy, it is important to consume it only when a bacterial infection has been proven. If the infection actually doesn’t exist and one takes Cefadroxil anyway, antibiotic-resistant bacteria may flare up, resulting in a problem that wasn’t even there to begin with and that may be significantly harder to treat.

As with every other medication, taking Cefadroxil in the dosage specified on the label or by the pharmacist is key. Online medical journals always highlight that finishing a full cycle of antibiotics is the only way to truly get rid of an infection. Even if symptoms do subside, stopping consumption will only result in the infection spreading again.

Precautionary Measures

Patients who are allergic to Cefadroxil or similar to ones such as cefdinir and cefepime should stay away from the drug. It should also be noted that patients who are allergic to penicillin may also be allergic to this particular drug. Patients with renal disorders should avoid taking the drug completely while individuals with intestinal infections should avoid both the cheap and expensive versions of Cefadroxil.

During Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

Though the drug has been proven by the FDA to not affect most foetuses during pregnancy, it is still important to inform your doctor or the healthcare professional at the pharmacy that you are pregnant before deciding to buy the drug. However, Cefadroxil does pass through to the infant in breastfeeding mothers so consumption of this drug should be stopped well before nursing begins.

Side Effects

Cefadroxil may cause certain side effects during the course of the treatment, however these rarely occur or are sometimes necessary in order for the drug to work properly. However, if any of the following side effects become increasingly frequent and bothersome, then contact your physician immediately. Some examples of the more rare side effects are bleeding gums, blistering or peeling of the skin, black stool, headaches, rash, vomiting and yellow eyes or skin. If any of these effects are experienced, it is imperative that they go to the doctor immediately.

Side effects can be easily avoided if the individual informs their doctor about any existing conditions that they have that may affect the functions of the drug. Additionally, certain slightly more common side effects such as diarrhoea, itching or wheezing may dissipate on their own with time.

Dosage

The dosage of Cefadroxil depends on the age and the condition of the patient. For patients above the age of 12, the dosage is 1000mg a day for skin infections and 1000mg twice a day for urinary tract infections.

For children under the age of 12, Cefadroxil should be administered depending on their weight and it should only be consumed by them in its liquid form.

Conclusively, due to the potent nature of Cefadroxil, depending on online sources will be insufficient. Check with your doctor before you decide to buy even the lower grade options available at your local pharmacy.
