Inderal is one of the beta blockers and has a wide variety of uses. It is usually used to treat high blood pressure, irregular heartbeat or tremors. After a heart attack it may be prescribed to help increase the chance of survival. It may also be used to prevent migraine headaches or angina, which are chest pains. It is a commonly prescribed to help control elevated blood pressure. Keeping the blood pressure at a safe level is important to help prevent heart attacks, strokes and various types of kidney problems.

This medication works by inhibiting, or blocking, how certain natural chemicals work in the body. These affect blood vessels as well as the heart. This helps to reduce undue strain on the heart and decrease the blood pressure by reducing the heart rate.

It is rare, but this medication has been used for other conditions. It has been prescribed for an overactive thyroid, or hyperthyroidism. It has also been used to help control the symptoms of anxiety.

Inderal is typically taken by mouth 2 to 4 times a day. IT should be taken before meals. Your physician will adjust the dosage to your individual situation and condition. Do not stop taking it without properly consulting your doctor. If you stop abruptly, your condition may worsen especially if you are taking it for heart disease or chest pain. If the doctor decides that you no longer need this particular medication he will give you a way to gradually decrease the dosage so that you can get off the medication safely.

While you are in the process of gradually decreasing the medicine it is a recommendation that you decrease or limit all physical activity. This will alleviate strain on the heart. If you develop chest pain or pressure in the chest contact your doctor immediately.
