Muscle relaxers or relaxants are medications that can act as sedatives and suppress natural central nervous responses. They are used for a wide variety of reasons, the most common ones being for pain relief, physical therapy and increased mobility. A lot of users have reported moderate relief within hours of consumption. It is also used effectively in the treatment of fibromyalgia where the muscle relaxer can induce considerable relief to the tensed muscles and thereby reducing muscle spasms.

Types of muscle relaxers

Of all the various types of muscle relaxers, valium based ones have been touted the most effective due to their quick relief and least side effects. Let us take a closer look at some of the most common muscle relaxants to have a better understanding of their differences.

Baclofen: This drug is widely used in the treatment of muscle pain induced by spine injuries. It is also effective in the treatment of multiple sclerosis. It can be bought in the form of tablets and should be strictly taken under prescription from a medical professional. Some of the commonly observed side effects include nausea, vomiting, headache, weakness, drowsiness etc.

Chlorzoxazone: Its uses are similar to the ones of Baclofen; however, patients with hypersensitivity are strictly advised against taking them. If the patient observes any considerable side effects after consuming the drug, a doctor should be consulted immediately.

Carisoprodol: It can be used for the treatment of muscle and tissue injury caused due to accidents or sudden impacts. It is a very effective sedative and can often cause addiction in patients when combined with alcohol. Patients with a history of hypersensitivity again should avoid this medication. It is available in the form of tablets.

Cyclobenzaprine: This is an excellent antidote for muscle spasms, also known as cramps. Due to its immediate action on muscle including cardiac muscles, people with a history of heart problems are strictly advised against using this medication. The doctor should be informed of any heart related medication that you are currently taking. It is available in the form of tablets and capsules. For pregnant women, Cyclobenzaprine is the safest muscle relaxant available today.

Dantrolene: If you have been suffering from chronic back pain or spasms, this is the best shot at curing it. It is also advised for people with heart problems, as opposed to Cyclobenzaprine. One common side effect is drowsiness.
