Diflucan is an anti-fungal medication which belongs to a group by the name of azole anti-fungals. Fluconazole is the active ingredient present in the drug. It has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration in January 1990 to prevent and treat several fungal discomforts. This acts by ensuring that the growth of various fungus in one’s body is prevented.

What’s more, Diflucan is prescribed for patients with weak immune systems - since fungal infections are more likely to grow on them. Such patients are those who have undergone cancer treatment or bone marrow and those who have AIDS.

Fungus infections are known to appear on one’s body like the bladder, throat, genital area, mouth, oesophagus and the blood. Some cases where Diflucan is commonly used for treatment, include vaginal or oral fungal infections and esophageal caused by Candida. Other fungal infections caused by Candida where Diflucan comes in most handy are namely urinary tract infections, peritonitis, disseminated infection and pneumonia.

The Proper Use Of Diflucan

There are two ways of using Diflucan - either taken by mouth or administered through intravenous infusion - a drip into the vein. The method and the length of treatment would usually depend on the severity of the fungal infection. A simple vaginal thrush may take a single dose by mouth to be treated, whereas worse cases would normally require 6 to 8 weeks to be completed treated.

The Diflucan by mouth can be taken with or without food - normally once a day. Before taking a dose the liquid suspension by mouth version of Diflucan, you must shake the bottle well and carefully measure the dose using a special spoon or device. Using a household spoon may not be a good option, as its measurement may not provide you your needed dose.

Diflucan dosage is based on your type of medical condition and your treatment response. In the case of the children, the weight is used as the basis - where the dose is recommended to NOT exceed 600mg. unless advised by the doctor. Diflucan works faster and better when the amount in the body is maintained at a constant level - therefore, it is ideal to make sure that you take Diflucan the same time every day.

Continue taking the medication until you have finished the full prescribed amount - even if all the symptoms have already disappeared. Once you stop taking Diflucan too early, this may allow the re-growth of fungus and the infection to again manifest. Avoid taking Diflucan in small amounts or larger amounts than what the health care provider has recommended, which can lead to negative effects of the drug. Also, Diflucan is not meant to treat a common cold or flu.

The consequences of missed doses are not known. But, you can inform your doctor in case you missed any dose during the treatment period. Food habits and lifestyle matters when you are taking Diflucan, because there are certain foods that can worsen your condition if you mix them with the medication.
