Bactrim is composed of two antibiotics: trimethoprim and sulfamethoxazole.  It is used to treat several different types of bacterial infections. It can be used for infections in the middle ear, respiratory system, urinary infections and intestinal infections. And it can also be an effective treatment for one type of pneumonia, pneumocystis. This particular pharmaceutical drug will not be effective for all infections. It especially cannot be used to treat viral infections such as the common cold or flu. If it is taken too frequently it can lose its effectiveness.

Bactrim should always be taken with a full glass of water or other liquid. It can cause mild stomach upset and can be taken with water to prevent it. It is important to drink lots of liquids while on this particular medication as it can lead to the formation of kidney stones. As with all antibiotics, it will work best if taken at the same times every day to keep a constant level in the body. And remember to take all of the pills prescribed until they are totally gone. Stopping them too early can allow the bacteria to grow and reoccur.

Typically mild side effects of nausea, diarrhea, vomiting or loss of appetite may occur. If these symptoms worsen contact the doctor immediately. There are some very rare but serious side effects that can occur. These include muscle weakness, blood in the urine and mental or mood changes. If you get a persistent headache, stiff neck or have seizures get immediate medical attention.

There are some very serious conditions that can occur from an allergic reaction to this medication. These can be life threatening side effects such as liver damage, or lung injury. If you develop a rash of any kind or have any trouble breathing or notice a change in your urine while on this medication contact medical professionals immediately.
