Amitriptyline hydrochloride, better known as Elavil, is a very good antidepressant which can be taken only if the doctor prescribes. It is a member of the tricyclic antidepressant family and is used mainly to treat the symptoms of depression. But not only symptoms of depression, it may be also used to treat different other types of medical conditions like migraine headaches, chronic pain, multiple sclerosis and eating disorder.

If you take Elavil under the prescription of a doctor then you may find great benefits. But if you take this drug without the instruction of a doctor you may suffer. This drug might be dangerous for people who take other medicines for depression or some other health conditions. This drug has the ability to affect the function of the heart so it anyone who has a weak heart should better stay away from this drug. Elavil takes quite a long time to work because it needs to build up in the system. Some might feel that after one or two dose that it does not work. But that is untrue. If you are taking the drug you have to wait patiently for a few days for it to be effective. You should not stop taking the meditation without consulting your doctor.

Like almost all drugs, this drug also has some side effects. Some side effects produced by it is quite dangerous. Severe rashes may occur by its intake. Stopping the intake of the drug abruptly may also cause side effects. It may also result in the relapse of the conditions that it was prescribed for. No matter what abnormal symptoms you see after the intake of the drug you should report it to your doctor.
