Avalide is a drug used in the treatment of high blood pressure. Lowering of high blood pressure prevents kidney problems, stroke, and heart attacks. Avalide is comprised of two medications: irbesartan and hydrochlorothiazide.

Hydrochlorothiazide is a diuretic (water pill) that leads to production of more urine thus helping the body excrete extra salt and water. Irbesartan relaxes blood vessels and allows for the easy flow of blood. It is an angiotensin receptor blocker (ARB).
 

How to use Avalide


Before taking this medication, ensure you read and understand the Patient Information leaflet that is provided with the medication. If you do not to understand anything you read, contact your doctor or pharmacist for clarification.

This medication is taken orally through the mouth, usually once daily. Avalide can be taken with or without food. Ensure you take the medication as indicated on the package or as directed by the doctor.

If this medication causes frequent urination, take it at least 4 hours before going to sleep. Also, if you are taking medications that help to lower cholesterol levels, take this medication at least 4 hours before these other medications.

The prescribed dose is dependent on the response to treatment and the condition being treated. Avalide should be used regularly so as to get the maximum benefit. Continue taking the medication even after feeling better. Ensure you complete the whole prescribed dose. If your condition worsens or does not improve, consult your doctor.
 

Precautions


Do not take Avalide if there is a chance of an allergic reaction to it. Also, discuss it with your doctor any past allergic reactions to medications. Avalide may contain some inactive ingredients that may cause an allergic reaction. For a better understanding of the risks, consult your pharmacist.

Before taking Avalide, discuss your medical history with your doctor especially of lupus, dehydration, liver disease, kidney disease and gout.

Before any surgical procedures, ensure you inform your doctor of this and other medications you are using at the moment, including non-prescription drugs and herbal products.

Dizziness may be caused by this medication. It is therefore recommended that you avoid any activities that require alertness e.g. driving until you regain full alertness. Also, avoid alcoholic beverages.

Drink plenty of fluids while taking this medication to prevent dehydration. This medication may increase your sensitivity to sunlight. Avoid prolonged exposure to the sun and wear protective clothing and sunscreen when outdoors.

For pregnant women, avoid using Avalide. It may pose various risks to the unborn child. Consult your doctor for more information. For breastfeeding mothers, Avalide passes into breast milk but is not harmful to the nursing infant. Talk to your doctor before breastfeeding.


Side effects


Various side effects may be experienced when taking this medication. The common ones are lightheadedness, stomach upset and dizziness. Consult your doctor if these effects occur persistently.

Serious side effects are quite rare when taking this medication. If you experience serious side effects, seek immediate medical assistance. These include eye pain, decreased vision, fainting, signs of high potassium blood level, signs of kidney problems.
