The proper name for Zoloft is Sertraline. It is used to treat many different conditions. It is effectively used to for treatment of depression, obsessive compulsive disorder, panic attacks, social anxiety disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder; and also helps in cases of severe cases of premenstrual syndrome. It can also be used to improve various other aspects of daily living. It can help to improve your sleep, mood, energy level and appetite. It can also decrease many unpleasant experiences such as fear, unwanted thoughts, anxiety and panic attacks. For those that have compulsions like hand washing or counting it can help decrease these urges. It is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor. (SSRI) It works in the body to help restore and maintain the proper balance of serotonin in the brain.

The benefit to anti-depressant medications is that they can also help prevent thoughts and attempts of suicide along with their other benefits. However, there are a few people who have worsening depression when they take Zoloft. It can also cause various other mood related symptoms including an increase thoughts of suicide. This is why it is important to discuss it thoroughly with your doctor before beginning the regimen.

There are a few other less serious side effects that can occur as well. Nausea, drowsiness, dizziness, increased sweating, interrupted sleep patterns, upset stomach or diarrhea are all possible when taking this medication. Most people who take the proper dosage as prescribed will have no side effects at all and usually they do no experience serious ones at all. IT is possible, although very rare, to have serious adverse effects such as being easily bruised, bleeding easily, decrease in sex drive or ability, muscle cramps or weakness, unusual or unexplained weight loss or tremors. Any of these should be reported to the doctor right away.
