Avodart also known as dutasteride is a prescribed and officially licensed medicine to treat enlarged prostate. The medicine works in our body by stopping the conversion of the sex hormone testosterone into DHT as DHT is responsible for the enlargement of prostates. It comes in the form of capsules in the market and can be taken orally once a day. Before taking this medicine it is quite important that you inform your healthcare provider about your previous medical conditions especially liver disease or failure or an allergy that you might have.

Avodart is basically manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline. As it is mentioned above the medicine works by stopping the conversion of the male sexual hormone to DHT. Since dihydrotestosterone is responsible for enlargement of prostate, the drop in the level of DHT in our body through the medicine is sure to treat the problem conveniently and relieving the symptoms of the disease.

Avodart proves to be very useful for men but it has got a few side effects. Not everyone who uses this medicine experiences side effects as most of them bare it quite well. And also the side effects which occur are minor ones and can be treated with basic medication or may improve automatically with time. The side effects that were reported in a small number of patients are erectile dysfunction, impotency, a decreased sex drive, abnormal ejaculation and breast enlargement. There are a couple of side effects that you should consider serious and pay proper attention as it may prove hazardous of left unnoticed for a long time. Such side effects are signs of allergy, itching, skin rashes, difficulty breathing, breast lumps etc. Unfortunately there is no way your doctor can know about the side effects that you may face after having the medicine so it is always a better idea to talk openly with your doctor to know more about the medicine and be as safe as possible.
